Abstract

This thesis explores the historical and theoretical foundation for the M.F.A. exhibition, You Are Here. Through sculptural and participatory practices, the works in You Are Here emphasized the importance of recognizing the present moment in everyday life. The show was composed of multiple artworks exhibited on the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania in both the Kipp Annex Gallery and the Patrick J. Stapleton Library. The text analyzes each work of art in the exhibition. It includes specific information about the utilization of artistic strategies, the physical installations and the viewers' reception of the works. References for the show include the search for spirituality in the Abstract Expressionist movement in the 1950s, the everyday and participation in the Happenings in the 1960s, aspects of Buddhist philosophy and the art theory of Suzi Gablik, which emphasizes social responsibility through performative works.
